On Friday, May 1, 2009, I participated in a session at the American Association of Museums (AAM) annual conference entitled “Where the Rubber Meets the Road: Economy, Tourism, and Museums.” The concept was to discuss the current recession as it is relevent to museums from a economic perspective (me), then down to a regional/city view (Meryl Levitz, President & CEO, Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation), and finally at the individual museum level (Emily Coleman Dibella, Director of Public Affairs and Associate Director of Mount Vernon). The session was expertly organized, moderated, summarized, and created by Jes Koepfler and Angie Ong of the Institute for Learning Innovation. My part of the session focused on 2 themes: museums need to understand their economic past before planning for the future, and use that knowledge to be a museum/cultural entrepreneur. I briefly discussed metrics that may be useful in the future when a fuller dataset is collected. I also collected a list of museum-relevant documents from the economics literature that may not be familiar to a museum audience. Both my presentation and the list are linked to below.
